UPDATE: VGC has corroborated Eurogamer’s claims in its own reports, and added that Epic Games’ The Matrix Awakens Unreal Engine 5 showcase was another one of the tech demos shown off by Nintendo. The demo allegedly featured advanced ray tracing and visuals comparable to PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, while also using Ndivia’s DLSS, which aligns with what previous reports have claimed.

Original story follows:

Rumous surrounding Nintendo’s mysterious next-gen console are continuing to gather momentum. Recently, it was claimed that the console may possibly have been at the center of behind-closed-doors showings at Gamescom 2023, which took place in Cologne, Germany from August 23 to 27. Now, a report published by Eurogamer is corroborating those claims.

As per Eurogamer, Nintendo held behind-closed-doors presentations at Gamescom, where it showed off tech demos of the Nintendo Switch successor to external development partners.

Allegedly, one of the tech demos showcased a “souped up” version of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild designed to highlight the improved hardware capabilities of the Switch 2 (or whatever it ends up being called). Eurogamer’s report states that this was “just a tech demo” though, and that there’s “no suggestion that the game will be re-released”.

Earlier this year, it was claimed in reports that Nintendo was targeting a release sometime in the second half of 2024 for its next-gen console. According to Eurogamer, however, the company is “keen” to target an earlier launch than that window “if possible”.

Recent leaks have suggested that a Nintendo Direct presentation is planned for next week. Whether we’ll be hearing anything whatsoever about the Switch successor remains to be seen.
