Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 and Super Mario Bros. Wonder Were October’s Best-Selling Games in the US

Circana (formerly known as the NPD Group) has released the latest software and hardware sales data for the month of October in the United States (via analyst Mat Piscatella on social media platform X), and on the software side of things, there’s an abundance of new releases debuting in the top 20.

The best-selling game in the US last month was, unsurprisingly, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, which has also instantly become the fourth-best-selling game of the year, behind only Hogwarts Legacy, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, and Madden NFL 24. That means it’s outsold the likes of Mortal Kombat 1, Diablo 4, Starfield, and Star Wars Jedi: Survivor.

Additionally, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2’s launch month dollar-sales are also a double-digit percentage higher than what the original game managed upon its launch in September 2018- though it’s worth noting that, unlike the first game, the recently-released sequel launched at a price of $70.

Meanwhile, in second place is another major new title that released on the very same day- Super Mario Bros. Wonder, which has also become the 21st highest-selling game of the year so far. It’s worth noting, however, that unlike most other publishers, Nintendo doesn’t share its digital sales data with Circana, so these charts account only for Mario’s physical sales.

A number of other new releases can also be found in the October top 20, with Assassin’s Creed Mirage (No. 3), EA Sports UFC 5 (No. 7), NHL 24 (No. 8), Sonic Superstars (No. 9), Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 1 (No. 12), Forza Motorsport (No. 17), and Lords of the Fallen (No. 20).

Meanwhile, on the hardware side of things, the PS5 was the best-selling console in the US for the month of October in terms of both dollar and unit sales. It’s followed in second place by Xbox Series X/S in dollar sales, and by the Nintendo Switch in unit sales.
