Fortnite has consistently been one of the biggest and most widely played games in the industry for several years running now, but over the weekend, it saw the biggest day even in its illustrious history. Epic Games launched the Fortnite OG event last week, bringing back locations and weapons from the game’s original battle royale season, and it’s proved to be a massively popular one.

Taking to Twitter, Epic Games recently announced that on its first day, the Fortnite OG event attracted over 44.7 million players, making it the biggest day in the history of the successful free-to-play battle royale shooter. Collectively, all players clocked in over 102 million hours of play.

How well the game continues to attract players in numbers over the course of the Fortnite OG season will be interesting to see, while it also remains to be seen whether consistently high engagement numbers will perhaps compel Epic Games to keep Fortnite OG around even after the season is over- maybe as a separate mode?

Recent weeks, however, haven’t been all good for Epic Games, with the company having laid off around 830 of its employees, amounting to nearly 16% of its total workforce.
